Four Toyota Motor Corp. units were named as defendants in a racketeering lawsuit that claims the companies collaborated to sell cars they knew were unsafe.
The lawsuit, filed Feb. 8 in federal court in Covington, Kentucky, targets Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America Inc., as well units that produce Toyota’s Camry and Avalon models and handle leasing and engineering.

The 10 individual plaintiffs seek class-action, or group, status to seek damages on behalf of U.S. buyers of Toyota-built cars with defects that could cause unwanted sudden acceleration. Toyota, the world’s largest automaker, is trying to recover from a global recall of 8 million vehicles and suspension of sales of eight models in the U.S., including the top-selling Camry.
At least 50 class-action lawsuits arising from sudden acceleration problems have been filed against Toyota or its subsidiaries. At least 16 additional suits have been filed by individuals claiming they were injured when defective parts in the cars failed.
The case is Viviano v. Toyota Motor Engineering and Manufacturing North America Inc., 2:10-cv-00024, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Kentucky (Covington).
