Dallas Accutane Lawsuits Update

Accutane® (isotretinoin or roaccutane) is considered by many dermatologists to be the strongest, most effective weapon against persistent, severe acne.

It is a derivative of Vitamin A, and the drug works by reducing the skin’s production of oil.

A current Black Box warning on Accutane cautions consumers about its potential to harm unborn children. Additional serious side effects associated with Accutane use include depression, colitis, and liver disease. Roche Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Accutane, has been named in thousands of lawsuits filed by patients who experienced severe side effects or whose loved ones experienced adverse reactions following Accutane use.

There are multiple known, serious risks associated with taking Accutane®. Among the more serious complications are:

* Miscarriages, birth defects, premature births, and deaths in babies whose mothers take the drug while they are pregnant
* Depression, suicidal thoughts, and suicide attempts
* Clinical hepatitis and liver damage
* Inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s Disease, and rectal bleeding
* Spontaneous osteoporosis, decrease in bone density, bone fractures, delay in healing of bone fractures, and muscle weakness
* Decreased night vision
A New Jersey jury has hit the pharmaceutical company that makes Accutane with a $25.16 million judgment in a lawsuit filed by an Alabama man who blamed the drug for his inflammatory bowel disorder.

Thirty-eight-year-old Andrew McCarrell of Moody, Ala., took the acne drug in his 20s. He says Hoffmann-La Roche Inc. failed to adequately warn of its side effects. McCarrell eventually had his colon removed.

The compensatory damages award came in a retrial. An appeals court overturned a $2.6 million judgment he won in May 2007.

Hoffmann-La Roche stopped selling the drug in June 2009. It cited generic competition and the cost of defending against lawsuits, which have sought to blame the drug for suicidal behavior and birth defects.
