Xarelto side effects trigger lawsuits

Xarelto GI Bleeding lawsuitsApproved in 2011, Xarelto (rivaroxaban) is one of the newest blood thinners on the market and is manufactured by Bayer and marketed in the U.S. by Johnson & Johnson’s subsidiary, Janssen Pharmaceuticals. So far, Xarelto brought in about $2 billion for Bayer and J&J in 2015 alone. In the first quarter of 2016, J&J reported the drug already made $567 million.

But people injured by the drug say its makers put profit before safety. The most dangerous side effect for people who take Xarelto is uncontrollable bleeding. The drug does not have an antidote, and former Xarelto users filed lawsuits saying they were not warned sufficiently about the medication’s risk.

Lawsuits against Bayer and Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen Pharmaceuticals are alleging:

  • the makers of Xarelto marketed the drug as a superior in the field of anticoagulants despite studies finding higher rates of gastrointestinal (GI tract) bleeding and transfusion in Xarelto users than users of certain competitors
  • the manufacturers of Xarelto continue to market the drug as a safe anticoagulant option
  • Xarelto users were not properly warned of the potential to cause fatal and uncontrollable bleeding events
  • Xarelto is linked to serious bleeding complications, intracranial hermorrhagning, excessive blood loss, eye bleeding (vitreous hemorrhage), gastrointestinal bleeding, stomach bleeding, wound infections from inhibited clotting and lack of effectiveness in preventing dangerous clotting.

In one recent lawsuit, Ruth McGowan filed a lawsuit on behalf of her deceased father, Thomas Dunkley. McGowan’s father took Xarelto to reduce the risk of stroke. However, he suffered serious bleeding in the brain after a taking the drug for a month. The lawsuit accuses the makers of Xarelto of not properly testing the drug and concealing safety risks.

There are currently 5,381 lawsuits pending in United States District Court of the Eastern District of Louisiana. Dr. Shezad Malik law firm is currently investigating Xarelto lawsuits from across the country.
